To: Community Coalition Against Mining Uranium c/o Mr. John Kittle

Dear John,

We live in a region renowned for its natural beauty, its pristine lakes and its peaceful and calm lifestyle. We need to protect this environment for the benefit of the future generations of Lanark, Frontenac, and Lennox & Addington.

The Green Party of Ontario supports:

A moratorium on uranium prospecting and mining in Ontario,

  • An update of the mining act to include subsurface rights with the title of land, and
  • The settlement of First Nation land claims.

Our mining laws are out-dated and do not give adequate protection for First Nation’s lands, property owners’ rights, or the environment.  Uranium mining in this area of Eastern Ontario puts at risk our water, our air, and our soil.  The Green Party of Ontario recognizes these risks and is committed to working to put in place the necessary policies to prevent further degradation of our lands and waterways.

I have grave concerns about the adverse ecological and health impacts caused by the mining industry. I was born and raised in the Sudbury Region and I am all too familiar with the severe effects of mining on the natural landscape, both in Sudbury itself, and also in the community of Elliot Lake which was a uranium mining centre at one time.

As the provincial Green Party candidate for Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox & Addington,  I fully endorse the on-going efforts of the Ardoch Algonquin First Nation and the Shabot Obaadgivan First Nation.

Yours truly,

Rolly Montpellier

Green Party Candidate

Lanark, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington C.A.
